<br />
- A new letter texture has been added. Besides shadow and reflection, you have the amazing relief effect. Just like creating a kind of 3D letters.<br />
<br />
You will find 3 buttons in the texture window for the 3 effects: shadow, relief and reflection.<br />
<br />
- More background choice: besides the customized backgrounds in the full page, you can create your own colored backgrounds with the color palette.<br />
<br />
- For a better user experience, the grid function for the full page is moved from the "settings window" to the "backgrounds window". Just tap on a grid model to activate it, and tap on the "X grid button" to cancel any grid.Nguyen Tan Honhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10012534156691546045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4154745616695523659.post-25505544475836099582011-07-17T04:28:00.001-07:002011-07-17T04:28:48.557-07:00Greek proverb<div class='posterous_autopost'><div class='p_embed p_image_embed'> <img alt="A_thousand_men" height="778" src="http://posterous.com/getfile/files.posterous.com/calligraphyart/2etKIzNQOU1ZV5kJxy9nUACiTq2FWNkNAhaj7OXtAvTJYdHzmLd6wps0uK8W/a_thousand_men.png" width="496" /> </div> </div>Nguyen Tan Honhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10012534156691546045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4154745616695523659.post-25271063147246247452011-07-16T13:00:00.000-07:002011-07-21T06:54:29.491-07:00The art of flourish in calligraphy<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>The art of flourish can be defined as embellishments of letters or as a stand alone ornaments. A letter can be flourished by an extension of a stroke or at its endings with serifs. <br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">You can practice the flourishes by learning the basic strokes first, and then their combinations. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><u><b>The simple strokes:</b></u></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">1/ the straight</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">2/ the curve: drawn clockwise (cw) or counterclockwise (ccw)</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">3/ the S curve (drawn cw-then-ccw or ccw-then-cw) with or without a curve between the 2 endings.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOGDLcvXfB6DsgBaBtFIoa8e3a5iqrHIeowe4ncaI7BWGFWE9Tl37blA10S5kC6U-YmlwB994K1J2yXr3wSTlLdQq7Vwwdbb7Bx8uNIJM0ewJV5O200ORGJa-gY_2oR1R_Q8OpgyvOEEM/s1600/S+forms.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOGDLcvXfB6DsgBaBtFIoa8e3a5iqrHIeowe4ncaI7BWGFWE9Tl37blA10S5kC6U-YmlwB994K1J2yXr3wSTlLdQq7Vwwdbb7Bx8uNIJM0ewJV5O200ORGJa-gY_2oR1R_Q8OpgyvOEEM/s1600/S+forms.png" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">4/ the spiral, defined as curve that keep going around: drawn cw or ccw, from outside-to-inside or from inside-to-outside. The spiral can be round or oval. Generally it's recommended for a spiral not to have more than 2 or 3 turns, otherwise it's visually boring.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuuJYapElQgjsteSFP2bxj3iow9K6j_2NhabCbDZNnHWduIQ3bOgdCNAXbQgJw_dG3f3RlskpAsfyX6N-UavvfPDsKzviRDRWfGwgBhoaUt_dyD7wIfoaUxxC1GS-GUfhxFlDXQFTKsC0/s1600/spirals.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuuJYapElQgjsteSFP2bxj3iow9K6j_2NhabCbDZNnHWduIQ3bOgdCNAXbQgJw_dG3f3RlskpAsfyX6N-UavvfPDsKzviRDRWfGwgBhoaUt_dyD7wIfoaUxxC1GS-GUfhxFlDXQFTKsC0/s1600/spirals.png" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">5/ the loop, is a curve crossing itself: can be outside or inside loop. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><u><b>The combinations:</b></u></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">A combination is made of simple strokes joined together.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">1/ Spiral exit. A simple spiral can be a curve drawn from outside to inside, then ends up at the center of it. But a spiral can also end outside the curve with an exit: when arriving at the center of the spiral, the stroke gets directly out of it by crossing the curves. This path is called « spiral exit » or "spiral tail", which can be a nonreversing or a reversing curve. And finally, the exit can end with or without a loop.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />

A serif is the small decorative end of a letter, it makes a style beautiful and unique.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCOKDKP57_BYJkUYoqXL4E4HRriJjZz1MXKSSA4QpBKmHllFGogTT3cTgP5eg4Dq6ZOmOgNx5hlbVBWNMF5h8PfZTL3eFfwYhkqMeRhY4Onl5M1NX6RtuTZSlbLgrWZawTKIT6nW9FueI/s1600/serifsandsherifs1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCOKDKP57_BYJkUYoqXL4E4HRriJjZz1MXKSSA4QpBKmHllFGogTT3cTgP5eg4Dq6ZOmOgNx5hlbVBWNMF5h8PfZTL3eFfwYhkqMeRhY4Onl5M1NX6RtuTZSlbLgrWZawTKIT6nW9FueI/s320/serifsandsherifs1.gif" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZAtaA90OOesrG1Pnggr3y77-hSzKk6p6fge-7qF5Q4eJamJGg07ws2H31Dknu7cNlp96KHoReeB1znbmY-1lvRo-CG0ztVEXMneZlFeaSa-9DtST7ukJHaiJBWpiGpbLnqy89KQYJ_4k/s1600/serif-sansserif1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZAtaA90OOesrG1Pnggr3y77-hSzKk6p6fge-7qF5Q4eJamJGg07ws2H31Dknu7cNlp96KHoReeB1znbmY-1lvRo-CG0ztVEXMneZlFeaSa-9DtST7ukJHaiJBWpiGpbLnqy89KQYJ_4k/s320/serif-sansserif1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
According to my observation, there are several ways to draw successfully a serif. The chronology, the direction and the number of strokes depend on each individual skill. It's like drawing a circle, some people will do it clockwise, and other prefer the counter clockwise manner.<br />
<br />
Finally, calligraphy is an art, then any artist has thousands of reasons to draw a serif in his/her own way.<br />
<br />
Here are some examples of letter with serifs:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM_S7tmiIWBE6ecz110MeVwlYQB9I_6JsHdAjYTOV0BvskTtgoqHomHSkDPl02NiROBgxFxU5mzK8t7UfXXEg86t9yGDm3dHEntD71_YB_YpFsa7_qeTPPENxi_vZq-SfGhbWPbXV_b6c/s1600/letters+with+serif.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="110" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM_S7tmiIWBE6ecz110MeVwlYQB9I_6JsHdAjYTOV0BvskTtgoqHomHSkDPl02NiROBgxFxU5mzK8t7UfXXEg86t9yGDm3dHEntD71_YB_YpFsa7_qeTPPENxi_vZq-SfGhbWPbXV_b6c/s320/letters+with+serif.png" width="320" /></a></div>And here are some ways to draw them:<br />

</ul><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />

Each style has both lower-case and upper-case letters (minuscules and majuscules). Except for the uncial hand, where lower-case and upper-case letters are mixed.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">WRITING WESTERN ALPHABETS</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">PEN ANGLE.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg44U_qzXzF5PNAS5Ll1zWI6FIirq4V-G9CoMpAGlHYari3O0F-e4DHHaDU-VOqEJ2R5vLP4SA4HFCmy04waq7TewGm6Er8E0dkgpuO_ljtRqn3OJTMpIPcWijvydE59yiyFGIT-QQan4g/s1600/pen+angle.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg44U_qzXzF5PNAS5Ll1zWI6FIirq4V-G9CoMpAGlHYari3O0F-e4DHHaDU-VOqEJ2R5vLP4SA4HFCmy04waq7TewGm6Er8E0dkgpuO_ljtRqn3OJTMpIPcWijvydE59yiyFGIT-QQan4g/s1600/pen+angle.png" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Calligraphers use large nibs and hold their pen in a specific angle to draw letters and give their characteristic effects. The pen angle is kept constant when writing a letter. Then the thickness of the stroke will vary according to the pen direction.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Each hand (font) has its own pen angle, and it's important to choose the correct angle in order to reproduce the style with accuracy and consistency. Occasionally inside a same letter pen angle can change to produce a specific effect, it's called pen manipulation. In real life calligraphers turn their hand to change angle, here you can simply and conveniently change the pen angle in 2 taps.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">LETTER HEIGHT.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjZloWOkyJO0l6gsHpbbryIOKt4WviHfw9Yio-4hzkzs2e6vca39vFLDbBjJS81UA-0-n2U9IZrI9J_kdlt8SMKFwhwZq0xKOovtO1s8mIgwRbmmH_aZkItCtiOOXURZJdc2HlDd1yxJk/s1600/nib+ladder.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjZloWOkyJO0l6gsHpbbryIOKt4WviHfw9Yio-4hzkzs2e6vca39vFLDbBjJS81UA-0-n2U9IZrI9J_kdlt8SMKFwhwZq0xKOovtO1s8mIgwRbmmH_aZkItCtiOOXURZJdc2HlDd1yxJk/s1600/nib+ladder.png" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Each hand has its own letter height defined for the good proportion. The measuring unit is the nib width of the pen, it represents the thickness of the stroke.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">In each exercise, you can find a nib ladder at the left part of the page. The nib width and the pen angle are predefined. You can start writing your first letters without any adjustment. During the lessons, only pen angle and colors can be changed. For your convenience, the writing page is larger than the screen.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
